STAYING ON TRACK DURING THE HOLIDAYS

3-ways-to-stay-healthy-during-the-holidays

Staying on track is extremely hard and it takes dedication to avoid those cookie, pies and holiday potlucks at your job. Is it possible? Yes! I did it last year! If you have a goal in sight there is no stopping you no matter what holiday it is. You can still lose that weight that you want. I missed out on my Starbucks holiday drinks, didn’t have pie and avoiding two potlucks at my job.

This year is a little different because I have exceeded my goal and I now have to tools to get me through the holidays without any guilt.

  1. EAT SWEET TREATS- In moderation, It’s all about moderation! It is ok to splurge and I like to splurge but I also make sure it is set in my mind that I can’t undo all of my work and progress because it is easy to get put in that mind frame.
  2. POSITIVE EFFORTS- Make an effort to have at least one consistent healthy meal. Every morning I have my Shakeology drink and I always make sure no matter what I plan on eating for that day or doing that day I know I am getting my Superfoods. Also load up on your veggies, if you have to have that bad food at least load up on your veggies and make your plate colorful!
  3. TAKE THAT WALK- Keep your work out routine. If you are visiting family and can’t keep up with going to a gym, go for a walk. I love evening walks right after dinner. So take that walk. Burn some calories and make it fun, have the kids or family join you!

Staying on track is hard but you can do it! Always stay focused on your goal that you have set for yourself. This holiday season I am committed to working out everyday with some rest days and continue to transform myself.

Tis the season to gain weight and be Merry! It’s that time of the year when you gain a bunch of weight because all of the goodies. I am in Marketing/ Sales for my day job which means my schedule will soon get filled with lots of Holiday parties. Reps from other companies will stop by with yummy treats and like always I will have to make a healthy conscious decision on what I want to do. I will prove that I can lose weight during the holidays.

I have recently taken my measurements and stepped on the scale and I gained 10lbs. I am definitely disappointed in myself, but I know what I will have to do to get back on track. I came this far and know I have the tools I need to lose those stupid 10lbs. I kind of knew I gained weight when those pants became a little tight LOL! I have picked up some not so healthy habits and I am proud to say I am at it again.

Today I started a new 30 day fitness program CORE DE FORCE and I am so excited to see the result. I am taking out my Holiday stress on a new workout. I wanted to start this program because this is not only a MMA inspired workout but I recently discover I still have no ab muscles from having my daughter. This plan comes with a meal plan, a 30 day calendar on which workouts to do and when. I hope to share my journey and experience here with you. I have always been a girl who loves to go to the gym so this will be a different experience doing the workouts from home.

My goal is 2 things——— 1. Inspire someone anyone to make the change to become healthier and 2. Push myself.

I will share my meals, my struggles, my wins, and I will be completely honest here. I am even pushing myself to do a lot more Vlogs! I literally hate the way I sound so this will be interesting and the irony is I had my own radio station and I received my undergrad degree in Broadcasting!

BEACHBODY COACH

Things have gotten a little complicated for me lately. I have gained 5lbs and some inches back in my waist. Well the last time I stepped on the scale thats what it said.

A few weeks ago I took the step to become a BeachBody. Many people may ask why? But my answer is so simple. It’s because I need accountability. I started working at the gym teaching Zumba since September. Now that people are coming to me for their weight loss goal my question is who will hold me accountable. I joined because I need accountability that I wasn’t getting anywhere else. This is something new that I am trying and I want you to keep me accountable while I go through this journey!

Some days you just have to make healthy choices and life is all about choices! Want to make healthy decision.... well ask me how! #fitness #shakeology #shakeologyaddict
Some days you just have to make healthy choices and life is all about choices! Want to make healthy decision…. well ask me how! #fitness #shakeology #shakeologyaddict

I have fallen off the wagon I call it. I no longer eat the way I should have but I am seeing some positives through this entire situation.

No Longer do I beat myself up for the weight I am gaining. I look at each day as a new day and I know I can turn that weight around and lose it—- because I am WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR!

No Longer do I say “I need to go on a diet” because it’s not a diet its a lifestyle.

I am increasing my workouts and decreasing my carbs and junk in take! I will update my journey all the time and I want you to hold me accountable.

4 Easy + Healthy Meal Ideas For Halloween

healthier-halloween

Halloween is just around the corner which means your kids are going to have junk food by the literal bucketful at their disposal. It is possible, though, to let your family indulge in some festive treats without all that sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. Whether you need to plan a classroom party or want to host a spooky soiree at home with appetizers, these ideas may offer up healthier swaps for your guests.

Healthy Halloween Meal Ideas

Here are some easy alternatives to candy bars and other sugary snacks to give your family this Halloween season:

Candy Apples: You might not think that apples coated in chocolate or other forms of candy are the healthiest alternative to candy bars. Candied apples encourages your kids to eat their fruit in a fun and festive way. Instead of just coating the apples in caramel, consider dipping them in a low-fat and low-sugar candy, such as cinnamon candy. This will give them a sweet and attractive treat that is both festive and and healthy. You can also involve your family as you dip them together and add toppings like sliced almonds or shredded coconut.

Chocolate-Dipped Fruit: Apples aren’t the only fruit that can make for a delicious your Halloween-themed snack. Try some chocolate-dipped fruit this month. Orange slices combined with dark or milk chocolate will get you in the mood with its orange and black appearance. Just melt the chocolate, then dip a small part of the orange slice into the chocolate, and place on wax paper to harden.

Jack-O-Lantern Grilled Cheese: If you are looking for a spooky snack for the kids, try some Halloween-themed grilled cheese. Start with whole wheat or whole grain bread, and cut the slices with a Jack-O-Lantern  cookie cutter. Cook your grilled cheese sandwich as you normally would, and serve your kids a fun and healthy meal. Add veggies to your sandwich for an extra pack of protein. Baby spinach, tomatoes, and green and red bell peppers are excellent options!

Pumpkin Biscuits: Want a healthy alternative with a fall twist? Try using pumpkin butter as a substitute  in your next recipe. Your biscuits still come out fluffy and flavorful, but they will have less saturated fat and calories. Try sprinkling in some nutmeg or cinnamon for added seasoning. You won’t even need to add more butter to them when they are done, since there is plenty of seasoning with them on their own.

Fall Smoothies: Combine ice, pumpkin puree, milk and/or yogurt, a dash of pumpkin spice, and finish it off with a sprinkle of cinnamon. This pumpkin flavored smoothie is best  as a snack or a meal replacement. Enjoy it ice cold and blended to your desired consistency.

Candy Corn Fruit Cups: Combine orange and yellow fruit for a simple snack. Layer your orange fruit on the bottom of a mason jar and then add yellow fruit. Think oranges, pineapples, melon. Top with whipped cream.
Whether you need to host friends or family members, these clever ideas can help you serve seasonal snacks that aren’t full of added sugar.

3 WAYS TO NATURALLY DETOX YOUR BODY

3-ways-to-naturally-detox-your-body

It seems like everyone is detoxing nowadays, from either TV, social media or the stuff they are putting in their body. Halloween is right around the corner and lets just say everyone in my house is required to detox a week after!

Many people buy expensive detoxes from their local vitamin store and can’t even pronounce some of the ingredients put in their “detoxes”. If you look around you there are natural ways you can get rid of the toxins put in your body for almost FREE!

Here are 3 ways to naturally detox your body:

  1. Eat a diet with ripe fruits, green leafy veggies- When you are detoxing your body naturally you always want to increase your intake with fruits and veggies. Not just apples and celery but fruits with nutritional substance. Kale, Spinach, Chards and Bok Choy is always a go to when I am detoxing.

   2. Drink lemon water- Evidence has proven by drinking lemon water will increase your metabolism. Also, lemons contain Vitamin C & some potassium, which if your immune system is like mine well anything can help. So don’t feel bad asking for extra lemons on the side to go with your water when you are out at a restaurant.

3. Get adequate amount of sleep- Sleeping puts your body into a repair mode. People that don’t get at least 7 hours of sleep have a high percentage of losing body fat. Sleep and your metabolism is controlled by the same part of the brain. When you are sleepy  a certain hormones is triggered and that increases appetite.

So don’t go out and spend your money on an expensive detox, you can now spend your money on that fitness device you wanted! How do you detox your body?

HOW TO WALK 10,000 Steps a Day

how-to-walk-10000-steps-a-day

It seems as if everyone is tracking their daily steps. Between pedometers, higher end fitness bands like a Fitbit or an UP3 by Jawbone, or even just using your phone to track your movement, there is no excuse to not know how many steps a day you are taking. When you track your steps, you are challenging yourself to live a healthier life each and every day. It is also nice to compare your progress and push yourself to reach new fitness goals.

Here’s how to reach 10,000 Steps a Day:

  1. Create a challenge for yourself. This can be anything you want that requires walking. Maybe you want to walk to the store instead of driving once a week or walk for thirty minutes every day after dinner. Walking 10,000 steps daily will help keep you active during the times when it is hardest. Start slowly so that you can achieve this step milestone in time. When I first started using my FitBit, I was surprised to see only 2,000 a day when I worked at an indoor office job. I slowly made sure to get to 5,000 each day before it was a breeze to get to 10,000.
  1. Make a specific goal. Keep track of what you normally walk in a day so that you can have an average step count. Next, you will want to make a goal to increase your steps by a certain percentage. For example, let’s say that you walk 3,600 steps a day right now. You will want to increase that amount by at least 10% for a week. Check your progress and then repeat! You will soon reach 10,000 steps a day.

When you record your steps daily, it will be easier to see how you have been doing. Some days it will be easy to reach your goal, but other days may be a struggle. Don’t give up!

  1. Track your moods. Do you feel motivated? Are you having issues reaching your goal? What is holding you back? At first you may not feel like walking 10,000 steps a day will be a huge increase or be a big improvement in your life. This is especially true in the beginning when you feel like you want to give up. Evaluate how you feel after you reach your targeted walking goal.

If you struggled to meet your goal, brainstorm ways to reach it daily. Get creative! Take the stairs, park further away when you are shopping, and use your lunch breaks to get up and move around.

  1. Make it fun. Download audiobooks that you only listen to as you walk or start listening to podcasts. This is how I “trick” myself into walking more since the only time I can finish my current novel or catch up on my favorite podcast is by walking around the block with my smartphone!

Does 10,000 daily steps sound overwhelming? It should inspire you to live a healthy life. Feel better and get fit with these tips to reach your milestone!

MOMMY MOTIVATION SERIES: MEET DE BOLTON

Need some motivation on this Monday?! Look no further! I met De Bolton when I was in the process of developing this series and what really wowed me was not only her results but how she was apart of the online community. For me the online community was what really helped me especially on those days I wanted to eat an entire pizza by myself.

I am happy to introduce De Bolton and don’t forget to check her blog out! She is super inspiring and reminds us how amazing us women are!

Tell me a little about yourself?

I am the best friend and wife to my husband first for almost 14 years. Mother to three lil diva’s ages 12, 8 and 2. I am a faith-based fitness blogger and brand ambassador. I am a big time fitness enthusiast which was not always the case. I love being active trying new things and motivating others trying to do the same. The high school cheerleader in me never left and instead of routing for my home team I now route for all those wanting to make a difference in their life.

How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

Three– 12, 8 and 2

Were you active before you had kids? If so what activities did you do regularly?

I was not my husband would take them outside to play and go to the park. Now I am playing on the playground with them. Racing them, my two older girls and I usually do a park play/workout once a week and it’s been a lot of fun.

Tell me about your weight struggle?

I never had a struggle until I got pregnant with my lil diva’s. That was the problem because I never had to workout or eat right to stay thin I never found the value of it. As a child my parents also used exercise as our punishment. Instead of being grounded we would have to hold a plank until my parents said stop or a wall sit, do 200 jumping jacks things like that. I know my parents had good intentions but it taught my siblings and I that exercise was punishment for bad behavior. I met my husband who was a personal trainer at the time and never saw his interest in working out. I was also a drive thru junkie and would hop from drive thru to drive thru all day long: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. I gained 95 lbs when I was pregnant with my first and never experience weight gain expected it to fall off after I had her and that was not the case. It was actually the opposite I gained more and learned of the struggle of weight loss. I then had my second daughter. I was fortunate to have a personal trainer and nutritionist throughout my pregnancy. At seven and half months pregnant I decided to “save” my money and do the last month and a half on my own. Needless, to say I gained 85 lbs with my second daughter. I got on the exercise train earlier with my second daughter and lost 105 lbs and maintained that for 6 years until I got pregnant with my third. The pregnancy of my third daughter was not a good time for my husband and I. Due to lay offs, lack of work, financial instability we became homeless. I learned I was pregnant three weeks after we lost our home. Ten weeks into my pregnancy I learned I was carrying twins and eleven weeks I had lost a twin. I fell into a deep depression coupled with bed rest I began to eat to self-soothe. I only gained 75 lbs. (I know only? But to me that was a little) after I had my daughter we were in a better state. We had moved into our new home when I was seven month pregnant, job stability and we had a better life situation. I still was depressed, anxious and sedentary. I gained another 20lbs and was discouraged at trying to lose weight. I then found an amazing Online Trainer and Community and it was exactly what I needed at the time. I was lonely as a mom, unhappy, depressed and I needed to find something that worked. I did and I began this last weight loss journey. I have found so much more than what I signed up for and now will be teaching others to have hope, try hard and be resilient too.
What was your biggest insecurity after having your kids about your self image?
The whole thing, the lack of privacy, being present, getting my act together. Particularly, my weight gain. I did not feel like I was in the right body. I felt like I was in my old, thin, could eat anything I want and not gain a pound body and then would get a glimpse in my reflection and be shocked at the lack of progress and the image didn’t match the one in my head.
What was your turning point when you knew you had to lose weight and get healthier?
Feeling like an alien in my own skin, hating my reflections all of those things were not me. I knew from past weight loss the only thing that was going to change my body was me and I had to stop with the excuses and do something uncomfortable, hard and different. It was really when my youngest daughter was 14 months and someone asked me “When are you due?” I was like, “Oh NO! I’ve got to change this, NOW!”

Tell me about your work out routine?

I typically workout 6 days a week. 5 being HIIT training and one being an active rest which is about an hour of cardio. It used to be early morning but lately it has been late at night after my daughters go to sleep. I am working on changing it back to daytime hours because my sleeps has been thrown completely off.

Tell me about your eating routine?

I intermittent fast 4-5 days a week. I usually eat every 3 hours like clock work and stick to protein and produce for my meals. Usually having grains like quinoa, oatmeal and organic corn after workouts before noon on non fasting days.

What exercises did you incorporate into your weight loss?

Functional Exercise training is my favorite, HIIT, weight lifting, and metabolic conditioning.

What was the biggest obstacle you faced when losing weight? Did you ever gain the weight back?

Plateus STINK!!! They can frustrate you but I learned that they are needed to gauge your progress and have you challenge yourself. So far, I have not gained any weight back still steadily losing it and 20 lbs away from my prebaby state.

What is the best advice you can give to Mommies out there that are struggling to lose weight or even get motivated?

Find you Why? It has to be something more than I want to look good. It has to be more than I want to be healthy. It has to be something that on those days you don’t want to get up you remember, “Oh I have to because of this.” It has to be something that gets you over that hurdle. Looking good is something that you can get comfortable with “Looking good enough.” Getting healthy is all relative and has lots of rooms for excuse but I want to be able to run a mile with my child or set an example for my daughters that taking care of their body, eating right and being healthy is important.Or, I know there watching so I need to show up.” Whatever it is that is going to get you passed that “I don’t want to today.” That is your why? It’s may take days or weeks but when you define it, it will make the difference between those who succeed and those who quit.

What helped you on your journey of weight loss?

Support-the online community that I had has been probably 50% of the reason I succeeded. Encouraging, loving women who want to see me succeed is amazing and I think key to weight los.

What is your motto?

God First, witness through fitness and glorifying God by living a healthy lifestyle fueled by faith. (If that is too religious which I understand) or FaithFueled™ is a lifestyle!

WORK OUT WITH RYDERWEAR!

I live by the motto if you look your best, you feel your best and that goes for even when your at the gym. Many people may not agree with me but I feel I at least need lipgloss or mascara before I  work out. Im not saying you have to go to the gym with a face full of make up or your hair done up because my hair is usually in a messy bun or an upside down pineapple.ryderwear-womens-bra

Typically I get off of work, change into my workout clothes and will work out for an hour about 3 times a week and then I teach Zumba on Saturdays so to say I live in gym clothes would be an understatement. There are only certain leggings I can wear that are not only are comfy when working out but I don’t have to worry about them rising when doing lifts and squats. I always look for cute workout clothes and I finally found a brand that provides not only comfy workout clothes but they are cute.

When it comes to sports bras it’s so hard finding a good bra that doesn’t make you feel like you have no chest! Ryderwear push up crop black sports bra ( what I am wearing) give you great support for any type of exercise. I danced for 90 minutes during Zumba class and the girls were nice and secure! The bra is made with performance fabric with 4 way stretch, breathable padding and body wick cool and dry material.

As soon as I went into the gym with these #LIFTSQUAT tights everyone complimented me! These are comfortable and are cute which is what I love! Also these shoes the Ladies D-Maks are perfect for squats. The flat soles that the shoes have allow your feet to be planted firmly on the ground which are perfect for squats.

I wish I could say what was my favorite but my shirt says it all— Muscles and Mascara! No I am not being paid to post about their products but I think not only are they perfect for people like me that loves good workout clothes and that are fashionable. Check them out www.ryderwear.com!

MOMMY MOTIVATION SERIES: MEET MEREDITH

meredith-mommyinleggings-motivation

Meet Meredith Breitenbach over at Mommy in Leggings. I had the pleasure of getting to know her and to be honest after interviewing her I teared up a little. Not because I’m hormonal but because her response about why she wanted to lose weight is similar to the reason I needed to get health. Learn how she took back control of her body and looks amazing! Meet Meredith!

Tell me a little about yourself?

I’m a 29-year-old first time mommy to a beautiful baby girl, who is just about 5 months old. My husband, daughter and I live in Minnesota with a mini zoo of 4 dogs, 2 cats and 2 hedgehogs. We’re huge animal lovers, spend a lot of time outdoors hiking, camping and fishing, and love traveling and new adventures!

How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

1 child, a daughter who is 5 months.

Were you active before you had kids? If so what activities did you do regularly? (Biking, Running, Etc.)

Semi active, but not intense. I totally let myself go during pregnancy and gained 46 pounds!!!!

mommy-motivation-series-meredith

Tell me about your weight struggle?

I’ve always struggled with my weight. I’m 5’9″, and have always thought of myself as bigger. I had always wanted to be some cute little petite blonde girl with perfect hair and makeup, graceful and delicate. And I’m NONE of those things. But I’m finally, now in my third decade of life, ok with this. I wish it hadn’t taken me so long to love who I was! I gained 46 pounds when I got pregnant, and it was all due to unhealthy eating. I didn’t necessarily crave foods, but I just wanted what was easy and delicious.

What was your biggest insecurity after having your kid(s) about your self image?

Probably my cellulite and stretch marks, but the weight loss has helped with cellulite, and I don’t care about my stretch marks as much anymore (hey, they’re proof my body changed in every way it could to carry my amazing daughter!).

What was your turning point when you knew you had to lose weight and get healthier?

When I had a daughter, and I knew I never wanted her to ever hear me say something negative about my body, and then feel the same about hers. I never want her to think she’s anything but absolutely perfect in every way, regardless of what shape she is. I don’t want to her see ads in a magazine and think “I want to be that thin” or “why am I not that pretty?” I want her to always love herself, and that begins with me loving my own body first.

Tell me about your work out routine?

After I had my daughter and was cleared for exercise, I started running a little bit here and there. When it got too hot for me in the summer months, I ran on the elliptical inside. Over the past month, my exercise routine has waned, and I need to get back into it…but I’ve stayed completely faithful to my new way of eating, and the pounds keep falling off.

Tell me about your eating routine?

I started eating foods I perceived to be “healthy” after my daughter was born: granola bars, oatmeal, etc. The weight came off, but slowly. Then, two of our friends introduced my husband and me to the Ketogenic Diet, which is a low carb, high fat, moderate protein diet. Yes–you read that right. HIGH FAT! The diet was developed in the 1920’s to help children with epilepsy. It has since been known to help people with diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and other diseases. This diet puts your body into a state of Ketosis–a process in which your body doesn’t have enough energy from carbohydrates to burn energy, so it turns to the high amount of fat to burn as fuel instead.

What exercises did you incorporate into your weight loss?

I’ve done very little exercise compared to the amount of weight I’ve lost (57lbs total so far). I do know I need to become more dedicated to exercise though!

The biggest obstacle you faced when losing weight? Did you ever gain the weight back?

The biggest obstacle was completely changing how I ate. If someone told me 6 months ago that I wouldn’t be eating bread or sugar (carbs!!) I would have laughed at them. It’s a hard diet to start, but the rewards are so amazing that it’s hard to stop! I haven’t gained any weight back, and the pounds are still coming off. I highly doubt I’ll ever go back to my previous way of eating. I feel SO great on this diet–always energetic (and that’s saying a lot with an infant and not getting much sleep!!), not hungry nearly as much as I used to be, and my mind feels sharper as well! It truly has become a way of life for me, and I could never say that about any other diet I’ve ever tried.

What is the best advice you can give to Mommies out there that are struggling to lose weight or even get motivated?

Really focus on your motivation–it doesn’t matter what that motivation is. Child? Family? High School reunion? Bikini? Whenever you’re feeling down, focus intently on the reason you started. Ultimately the reason you start, has to be strong enough for you to keep going. Every other time I’ve tried to maintain a diet, my motivation wasn’t strong enough. Now, if I ever feel like I’m struggling, I think of my daughter and tell myself that I’m doing this for her–so that if I can feel good in my own skin, I can help her to always feel good in her own. Confidence is such an enormous thing for little girls, and I want my daughter to always have confidence in herself, and never look in the mirror and think she’s flawed.

What helped you on your journey of weight loss?(friends, family, support groups)

My husband started eating Keto with me (he lost 20lbs!!!!), and also the support from my Instagram Keto Friends was amazing. I started an IG handle only for my Keto meals, and to follow Keto accounts, called @mamabear.eatsketo. It’s an outlet for me to see meals as inspiration, share my successes, and help and be helped by others. Taking before and after pics has also been super inspirational to me. I feel stupid taking them, but then I see the difference and can’t believe how far I’ve come. It makes me feel proud of myself that I’ve continued to make these healthy changes, and my body is responding well to it!

What is your motto?

If you never try, you’ll never know what could be.
